| Editor's Note: This begins the second installment from the pages of Ralph Rose's scrapbooks, thanks to generosity of his daughter, June Rose Hudgins. In the e-mails June sent these photos with, June sometimes included some of her personal thoughts and recollections. Whenever possible, I've included those comments. - DZ | |

"Here she sits, brand new and straight out of his garage
for the 1961 season. Ralph had it painted the same color as
the Plymouth Z-1 being built in New Bern, and then we towed
it to New Bern to have the same man do the lettering. They
were identical, but different body styles.
There was a Nazarene church located right behind our
garage. One Sunday we had both Z-1's sitting in our driveway
to take to Langley, and it seemed like the entire
congregation came out to look at the race cars. Ralph had a
strict rule that the cars would never be cranked up on
Sunday morning."

This is a shot of Langley Field Speedway (dirt track) in 1961. You can see "The Red Devil" (Z-1) third to the left of the pole. The red car to the right of us was the 1VA, built by Charles High and Ray Logwood. It was driven by various drivers thru the years including Doug Yates of Chapel Hill, NC. |

"I got a Brownie Hawkeye camera (with flash attachment)
for Christmas in 1959. Believing I was the Lois Lane of the
infield, I ran around getting everyone to pose for
pictures. They were all very kind, but I was careful to
only take pictures after the race so as not to bother
anyone... I think.
This is a shot of Jim Torrie by his car #38. The car to
his right with the star on it was his brother, Butch
Torrie's car."
