They
invest the hours, the frustrations of trying to track down information
and pictures, and they end up with the cuts, burns, and torn knuckles.
A true labor of love which they love to share with anyone who will only
take the time to stop and talk with them. To these folks racing is
a whole lot more than the show we see on television every week.
The
stories told, the stories that are ongoing and continuing with each and
every one of these cars which is restored and each one of these meets
which is attended; all such a large part of the ongoing saga of
automobile racing, not just here in our country, but all
around the world.
Scott
Pacich mentioned the ghosts in a recent article: Scott, them damn ghosts
must get around a lot. I know that at least some of them made
the trip up here because if you stop and listen real
carefully, if you are able to shut out the wonderful sights
and sounds that surround a meet of this type, if you've spent the
better part of a lifetime playing with these damn old racecars, those
ghost sure do talk at you.
Or
is it just a warm summer breeze blowing through the open garages?
You
folks can believe whatever you want. I think I agree with Scott.
It's the ghosts, for certain.
Sure
am glad that I'm able to hear them, too.
Unfortunately my
camera decided that this would be a good week end to take a vacation,
most of the exposures came out black, and I managed to get a pretty
good sunburn as well. All in all a small price to pay to immerse
oneself in nearly one hundred years of history, spend some time
with friends, meet some new ones, renew some really old friendships, and
even let the ghosts tell a few of their stories.
And
are not the stories one of the best parts of it all?
A
special thanks to all the folks at NHIS who have gone out of their
way to be of assistance to a tired old fool who thinks he can write.
(I used to think that I could race but I outgrew that stupidity.)
Their
hospitality and generosity and most of all the friendship which
they have extended is way beyond anything covered in their job
descriptions. Bob Bahre has assembled a crew to be proud of.
