A Tribute to
Daryl Gohn

Daryl Gohn was the exception to the saying that nice guys finish last. They just don’t come any nicer.

Daryl grew up around racing. Since the early 1960’s Gohn Jewelers, the family business started by his father Glenn Gohn Sr., sponsored legendary drivers like Bobby Abel, Roger Rager and Bobby Weaver. Daryl, his older brother Glenn Jr. and his father all shared in common their deep love of racing.

Daryl began his career modestly, learning his craft a lap at a time and continuing to fly the Gohn Jewelers colors. As time went on, he took on the combined responsibilities of running the family business, becoming a loving husband and father of 2, as well as becoming an accomplished racer. Daryl had an intense love for life and found friends and family every bit as important as his dedication to his racing career.
He scored his first feature win at Lincoln Speedway in 1986 in his own #22 Gohn Jewelers car. His new level of performance got him noticed and he landed a ride in the beautifully prepared Toll House Restaurant #K1 owned by Dick Kreuzburg. Glenn Sr. watched with great pride as his son continued to score 3 more wins at Lincoln and Williams Grove Speedways. They were very popular wins with the fans too. It seemed as though things just couldn’t get any better.
Then on April 3, 1988 Glenn Gohn Sr. passed away. Daryl was devastated by the loss of his father. But as his father would have wished, Daryl continued to race. On April 23, 1988, just 20 days after his father’s passing, Daryl Gohn lost his life due to injuries suffered in a turn 3 accident during the first lap of his qualifying heat at Williams Grove Speedway.
Even after all this time, it’s still hard to understand how fate could step in and take away such a promising driver, a loving father and husband, and such a genuine, down to earth friend in the prime of his life. There can be found some comfort in knowing that Daryl and his father are together again, sharing that close bond they always had. I can also say with great pride that he was a good friend and that I had the pleasure to know him and share in some of those very special times.
