Fairgrounds 1962 Submitted by John Sheaffer |
John writes: "Here are some hard to find pictures of some Class A Sportsman racing at the Fairgrounds in 1962 during Fair Week. I have never researched racing at Carlisle and can not elaborate much about racing there. I did stumble across an old advertisement from around 1953 announcing races during the fair. It stated that the Blue Mountain Racing Association was running the show and the likes of George Speck and Bill Miller would be there. The black and white pictures here are from August of 1962. These were the Silver Spring cars from that era. I have been told that periodic racing did occur there during the fair. I can only remember the 1962 race."
![]() Kenny Fortna's #43. The crash occurred on the back stretch during the feature. It actually happened right in front of me but the dust was so bad all you hear was the crashing. He apparently broke down and got clobbered by numerous cars. He was severely injured and is paralyzed from the waist down. |
