Westport
Stadium - Baltimore, MD.
1951 – 1963
Originally
built as a baseball stadium for the Negro League “Baltimore Elite
Giants” in 1950, the stadium quickly introduced auto racing in 1951
after the team left for Nashville. It was located on Old Annapolis Road
between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Patapsco Ave, on the
southwest side of Baltimore.
A
1/5-mile dirt oval was laid out around the baseball diamond with telephone
poles used as an inner guardrail. The track was sanctioned by NASCAR for
its entire run and was promoted by Ed Otto and Bill Heiserman.
Sportsman-modified
stock cars were the main class with hobby cars added in 1956. Special
events included NASCAR short track late models, NASCAR & AAA midgets
and All Star Circuit of Champions Convertible Late Models.
The
track closed in august of 1963 and the site was demolished.
