A Salute to Joe Shaheen

Joe Shaheen, a successful businessman and builder, owner and promoter of the Springfield (Illinois) Speedway

A candid snapshot of the Springfield Speedway soon after it was constructed in 1947. A very young Marvin Scattergood, who would become the official track photographer for nearly 25 years with help from his partner Randy Christie, took it.

Another candid shot of Springfield driver, Chuck Weyant. His son Tony, named after Tony Bettenhausen, also would race at Joe's.

Dwight "Brownie" Brown from nearby Champaign, Illinois was a tough competitor and won several features at Joe's.

Jimmie Caris was touted as being from Hollywood, Florida and had a strong following.

A young Leroy Warriner who had topnotch equipment and was a regular winner. He became a fan favorite wherever he raced. His hometown was Indianapolis, Indiana.
