The Mystery Midget
from Down Under

17 years ago, Australian Jim Powell bought a vintage American-built midget. For the past 17 years, Jim and his good friend, Robert Steep, have referred to the car as the "Etter Ford", mainly because when it was being restored back in 1985, the only reference point they were able to establish relating to its past was the name James Etter from Pennsylvania. They were informed that Bill Schindler and possibly Tommy Hinnershitz might have driven this midget in the 30's or even early 1940. The midget was believed to have been owned and raced by James Etter prior to it’s coming to Australia, but attempts to gain confirmation from Mr. Etter never produced a reply.

Both Jim Powell and Robert Steep are members of the Vintage Speedcar Association, which is based in Sydney, New South Wales and they enjoy the opportunity to display their midgets, both on the track and at static displays all around the eastern states of Australia.

The midget carries the number 37 because they were told it was built around that time. This makes it one of the oldest regularly used midgets in Australia. The midget runs a Ford V8/60 and is described as being a treat to drive. They have enjoyed many "Spirited Demonstrations" as events in Australia are called, behind the wheel of the "Etter Ford".

However, they seem to have run in to an absolute dead end. American Racing historian and author, Gordon White, contacted Jim Etter and asked him about the car. Jim said that he had heard it existed, but says he never owned such a car and has no knowledge of it.

Here’s where you can help to solve the mystery. They would appreciate any help in obtaining information or the name and contact details of any one that might be able to help in locating information relating to this really neat old midget. As we all know, tracing and detailing the history of some of these great cars can often be more difficult than the actual restoration process.  If you think you can provide any information on this mystery midget, please contact Robert Steep at cheval.rugs@bigpond.com.au
