Late Model Driver... Steve Smith?! By Steve Williams |
Here's
a rare picture of well known "Late Model" driver Steve Smith.
In 1979 Tom Livelsberger took over the promotion of Selinsgrove after Jack Gunn fell ill and had to give it up. Livelsberger switched nights to Friday so as not compete with his Lincoln Speedway. Friday night fields were great with Smith, Kauffman, Randy Wolfe and quite a few big names in the late models as well, but the crowds dropped off immediately. Livelsberger continued into the summer with special shows which meant the late models and sprints competed on opposing weeks in races with special names but the crowds dwindled even more. By mid summer Livelsberger turned the track over to Joe Trone and switched back to Saturday nights. The following year George and Earl Zechman along with Terry Gonzalez formed GET and took over at Selinsgrove. I think Smith may have won one more late model race that year driving for Barry Kleindienst. Steve Williams
