A Tribute to Bob Baumberger

Photos and comments contributed by JR Hughes

"Here are some photos of a childhood idol of mine, Bob Baumberger, of Rapid City, SD.  Bob raced from 1967 to 1999, returning for a few shows in 2000.  In his last race, he was hit by a rock that severed the tip of a finger, yet he finished the race! Bob won tons of races, including four late model point championships."

1967

Where it all began, a 1953 Buick built by Mel Torres.

1968

Bob's first Ford. The first time he ever got upside down was in this car
1969

One of Bob's most colorful cars. He finished in the top five in points.
1970

Almost won the point championship; he and Dave Holter traded the top spot all summer long, had to settle for second behind Dave's Studabaker.
1971

Bob's last hobby car, destroyed after a roll over at season's end.
1973

Bob's first late model, the former Dick Bowman car. He only ran about half the season.
1976

One of my favorite Baumberger cars. Ironically enough, the paint was supplied by Dave Holter!
1988

From 1981 on, red became the color of choice for the 55 car.

"Bob continues to live in Rapid City, as a building contractor." - JR Hughes
