John Hamilton's 1962 Volvo PV544

John Hamilton writes: "I have owned the car since 1963 - It got me through undergraduate school and then became a B Sedan. It now has a B18 engine of about 1783 cc. Volvo 4 speed with Tilton aluminum  flywheel and a special lightweight clutch. Head has been extensively modified by Kirschner Performance out of Jefferson. PA.

Engine has two 45 Webers, Elgin cam from the West Coast built to our design, Wiesco pistons and Carillo rods. I run an aftermarket Crane ignition system.

Car has discs all the way around  which I can adjust from the cockpit and uses Porterfield pads at all four corners. Have a specially designed oil sump that kicks capacity out to 9 quarts including the oil cooler and we use a Mellinger cast iron pump that has been resprung to get higher oil pressure.

We run either a Panasport wheels with Goodyear GS/CS tires, American Mags with Goodyear Blue Streaks, or steel wheels with our rain tires which are Hossier Dirt Track Specials.

Car has a 12 gallon fuel cell and uses a Holley pump to get minimun of 110 octane race fuel to the carbs. All plumbing is braided stainless and includes an ACCUsump reservoir which hold approximately 2.5 qts. of oil for start-up and oil starvation in the corners.

Rear end is a locked Dana 30. Springs are all custom and are changed depending on the track at which we are competing. We run Koni adjustable shocks, and sway bars front and rear.

All the fenders both door and the roof have been replaced at lease once over the years due to "unfortunate incidents" that were never of my making (at least that's what I tell the wife).

We run road races at the Glen, Lime Rock, Pocono, New Hampshire, Virginia International Raceway, Roebling
Road in Savannah, Mid Ohio, Mossport ( above Toronto) and Mt. Treblant in Ontario. We consider Summit Point our home track and run there at least 3 times a year and frequently against the modern racecars usually Labor Day weekend. Ran the Pittsburgh Grand Prix last year and were told "nice but don't come back."

We were running forth overall and first in class when the cam snapped two laps from the finish. Think the sports cars guys are uncomfortable with a car that looks like a '48 Ford and sounds like a small block Chevy.

We hold class records at the majority of the hillclimbs
sponsored by the PA. Hillclimb Association and won the East Coast Hillclimb Vintage 1 Championship for 3 or 4 years running until we became immersed in road racing again."
